Help! The Paparazzi are Following Me!

In the therapy world, when a person is experiencing something not particularly ideal or hard or challenging, we therapists like to help our clients “reframe” their problems in such a way that they can be viewed in a more positive light.

For instance, if you drank so much carrot juice your skin turned orange, a nice reframe might be, “You can always be the best and brightest pumpkin on Halloween without having to paint your body.”

Or if your coffee machine breaks as you are trying to brew your first cup of the day, your therapist might reframe the situation by saying, “Look, this was just an impromptu way to begin reducing caffeine in your diet as you’ve previously desired.”

Of course, they are saying this as you are ferociously searching to find their stash of 5-hour energy drinks, but it’s a reframe nonetheless.

Well in my household, I have come up with a useful reframe of my own to be used on days when I feel like I am being stalked followed by an adorable, blue-eyed 18-month-old, and no matter where I go or what I do, he is no more than two feet from me.

I call it “The Paparazzi Delusion Reframe.”

Instead of feeling like I am a normal mom that has no privacy while getting dressed, using the bathroom, taking a shower, etc., instead I pretend I am the hottest celeb on the street and I just can’t get the paparazzi to leave me alone.

Sure my paparazzo is super short, yells “mama” and only get shots of a woman in her pajamas with no makeup that no one wants to buy. But hey, he’s darn persistent and will go where no other paparazzo will go. And that takes some dedication. And skill. And sheer talent if you ask me.

You may say I am crazy. I say I am creative. ;)

You may call this delusional. I call it reframe magic.

So I’m serious. Try it the next time you are feeling like you can’t get a moment alone. You will instantly feel more glamorous.

I promise.

(Unless your paparazzo tries to get in the shower with you. That’s when the reframe just gets creepy. ;)
